Research Opening: Kickass (2010)
Kickass
Using his love for comics as inspiration, teenage Dave Lizewski decides to reinvent himself as a superhero - despite a complete lack of special powers. Dave dos a costume, dubs himself "Kick - Ass", and gets to work fighting crime. He joins forces with father and daughter vigilante team of Big Daddy and Hit Girl, then befriends another fledging crime - fighter called Red Mist, but a scheming mobster soon puts their alliance to the test.
Target Audience (Who It Appeals To)
After watching the opening to this film, I can infer from that this film was targeted at teenagers and adults that range from 15-25. I think this age is suitable for the movie because the humour within this film appeals to this age range, as some bits of the film are quite crude, which makes it popular between the lower years, as they find the crude humour brings more hilarity. I feel that the age range below 15 will not enjoy this and may find it quite harming to their mind. As well as this, it's a 15+ age rating therefore they have an inability to watch this. However, the older age may find this type of humour quite concerning and they may not enjoy it as much as it may not be to their type of humour.
Sound
In the beginning of the opening scene, the sound is very inspiring, with a hint of the theme of heroicness. As well as the inspiring theme in the background, the main character (future Kickass) expresses the idea that not one person wouldn't give being a hero a go, which then makes it inspiring with the music as well as the narrative over the top. Also the noises of New York in the background give a sense of realism and makes it seem as though you are there, it adds to the background.
Representation of characters and mise en scene
The opening of the scene holds the introduction to what is happening within the city. It has a pan shot of all of the New York residents or passerbyers pointing and looking up at the 'super hero' about to attempt to jump off of the empire state building. As well as this it holds then a close up shot of the super hero's face as he is looking over the horizon very proudly.

Research Opening: The Hobbit (2013)
Bilbo Baggins lives a simple life with his fellow hobbits in the shire, until the wizard Gandalf arrives and convinces him to join a group of dwarves on a quest to reclaim the kingdom of Erebor. The journey takes Bilbo on a path through treacherous lands swarming with orcs, goblins and other dangers, not the least of which is an encounter with Gollum and a simple gold ring that is tied to the fate of Middle Earth in ways Bilbo cannot even fathom.

The Hobbit
Target Audience (Who It Appeals To)
After watching the opening scene to The Hobbit, I can infer that this film was primarily targeted to audiences between the ages of 12-50. This wide range of audience made this film a very popular film for everyone. As well as this, many of the older teens (16-20) may have read the book that was published earlier than this film, therefore likely creating a wider fan base for the film because they enjoyed the book, therefore they would then watch the film. This film appears to a wide range of people because of how amazingly filmed it is, and how good the storyline is for everything that watches. Many people over the age range of 60 may not enjoy the film as the story line may be confusing or too action packed for them. As well as this they may have not read the book, therefore may not be interested in watching the film, this is the same for anyone below 12, as they haven't read the book, or the storyline may be too confusing for them to follow.
Sound
Throughout the opening scene to The Hobbit, it starts off with slow and magical sounding music, this brings a sense of calmness and reminisces of his life. From this music I can really feel connected to the film as the light, quiet music really makes the audience concentrate more and feel more relaxed at the start which makes them more interested and makes them want to build more tension throughout. As well as the relaxed music, also while he is reminiscing about his old days, there is a narrative in the background which makes you feel more informed about the background story, and introduces the next bit of the story well, as it shows the history. This creates a very well known film, and also very informed audience which makes them be more intrigued about the story.
Representation of the characters and mise en scene.
In the opening scene I can see that the main character is very reminiscent about the hobbit he once was, the outfit he's wearing proves that he isn't that high up in the film, however his bravery and wit make him the main character he is. From how old the character is, you can see that he was reminiscing over how he once was a hobbit and from his face you can see how happy is was about it. The close up on the objects and focusing on them makes us focus our attention on them, and makes them more important throughout the opening scene. The dimmed lighting in the scene contrasting from the daylight outside really makes the character seem upset and how he is missing how he once was, as in the inside of his house is dimmed down, and the outside daylight is the only way of lighting up the room, which may signalise that he may be going on another adventure. From the narrative and the reminiscent memory scenes, a realistic feel is brought to the introduction. You can see in his head all of his memories, which the audience really enjoy as they get an image of it instead of having to imagine it themselves. This would make everyone have different views and imaginary thoughts on what happened through his memories, whereas by showing them we get a real sense of him.
Atmosphere
The atmosphere in the opening scene is very inspiring as he has his memory thinking about the history he has been through, this really sets a calm atmosphere, and makes everyone more interested on being informed on what happened in the past. It sets us up for the rest of the movie because we know what has happened in the past, making the audience enjoy it more as they know the back story and history of the hobbit before the main story line.

Research Opening: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2
A clash between good and evil awaits as young Harry, Ron and Hermione prepare for a final battle against Lord Voldemort. Harry has grown into a steely lad on a mission to rid the world of evil. The friends must search for the horcruxes that keep the dastardly wizard immortal. Harry and Voldemort meet at a Hogwarts Castle for an epic showdown where the forces of darkness may finally meet their match.
Target Audience (Who It Appeals To)
After watching the opening of the film of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, it connotes that this film was targeted at teenagers and adults. From this I will narrow it down to being 13-50. This is because many of the people who have watched the film have also read the books that JK Rowling has released before the movie. As well as this, it appeals to teenagers as it has a really good storyline and also is easy watching, being not too graphic for anyone below the age of 18. In addition to this, many people over 60 wouldn't want to watch it because they may have missed the book reading, and wouldn't enjoy the film as it is very action packed and there are a lot of films. Moreover, this applies to people under the age of 13 as well because they wouldn't have been old enough to read the books, as well as not knowing about the storyline hence perhaps being confused by it.
Sound
In this film opening, the music in the background has a very synth style feel to it, this really brings tension to the start of the film and fits really well with how the opening sequence is perceived to the audience. This type of music is quite eerie and quiet - making it very tense for the audience to watch, therefore making them want to watch it more to see what happens next.
Representation of the characters and mise en scene
The opening to this film holds the re-introduced characters of Snape, Voldemort, Ron, Harry and Hermione. The scene of the opening is very dark and morbid, it holds a incredibly scary feel to it, this causes a lot of tension to build up to the audience already, in the opening, which is a good idea, as it could set up a big deal of tension through out the opening of the scene and the part beginning to the film, which will keep the audience interested and included into the film and make it more enjoyable to watch and keep the audience on the edge of there seats, which i will include in my final trailer piece. Each shot of the opening scene of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 is that each scene has very low lighting and creates a very dark atmosphere with in the scene, which reminds them of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1, and creates a very sad tone to the start, as it has a shot of Dobbys grave stone to signal that he died in the last film, and reminds the audience how they felt in the film before.
Atmosphere Created
After the opening to this movie, the atmosphere that was created while i was watching this was a very eerie feeling to it, it created a dark and dismal atmosphere as all the lighting was dimmed within each shot and everything was dark. The shot of the ghost watching over Hogwarts makes the atmosphere also very scary and makes you wonder what will happen later on. In the shot with Snape also creates a worrying atmosphere because he is looking out from the window which makes him look like he is pondering and thinking about revenge which creates that within your mind too.

Research Opening: I Am Legend (2007)
Representation of the characters and mise en scene
In the opening of the film holds the introduction to the main character Will Smith. I can see by the opening scene of the film that Will Smith is very smart and can drive well, this is shown within the film because of how well he drives within small areas and how he can drift within his car he is driving. As well as this, it shows that he is very attached to his dog because how he is taking the dog with him in the passenger seat. From this, i can tell that there is danger ahead to one of the characters because of how the usually busy city is now very scarce and eerie, this springs to mind the idea of the whole population becoming zombies, or there was a big apocalypse on the city. The sense of day seems to be morning, which means that maybe over night, something happened to the whole town, and resulted in a abandoned, eerie city. The shot of POV while Will Smith is driving, shows a sense of realism into the movie and adds more effect onto the audience because they are viewing it. As well as bringing a sense of realism, also brings tension because you are seeing the point of view from the main characters eyes, which show how scary the perspective was from his eyes. The opening scene also makes you intrigued to watch the rest of the film because you want to wonder how and why the whole city has been wiped out.
Atmosphere Created
The atmosphere created within the opening scene brings a very eerie feel to the audience, this is because the city that used to be busy and loud, is now abandoned and and scary. The atmosphere of the car driving adds adventure and a sense of mysteriousness because he wants to find out what has happened to the city, and why it is suddenly abandoned overnight, which makes you want to carry on watching the rest of the movie.
I Am Legend
I Am Legend is a 2007 American post - apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Will Smith. It is the third feature-film adaptation of Richard Matherson's 1954 novel of the same name, following 1964's The Last Man On Earth and 1971's The Omega Man. Smith plays virologist Robert Neville, who is immune to a man-made virus originally created to cure cancer. He works to create a remedy while defending himself against the virus' victims, who turn into hostile mutants.
Target Audience (Who It Appeals To)
After watching the opening of the film, i can connote that this film was targeted at teenage and adults that range from 16-40. I think this as it has appealed to many audiences around the world for being an amazing film. However it is aimed for audiences of 13, as its a PG-13, however despite this, i feel that 16+ audiences will get the most out of this film and understand it the best. Teenagers will especially enjoy this film as it holds many funny moments within it, which may be shared by friends for future generations from this great film.
Sound
In the beginning of the opening scene, the sound is all very quiet, and you can only here the sound of the car that WIll Smith (main character) is driving. The sense of quietness in the town, brings an idea of danger, because of the fact of a busy city, with no other cars of humans making noises or anything, just complete silence, this brings a sense of danger to the audience, because how silent the area is. The eeriness of the whole opening scene makes the tension of the scene build because of how Will Smith is looking around everywhere trying to find any sort of life.

Research Opening: Paranormal Activity 2
Paranormal Activity 2
Paranormal Activity is a 2009 American found footage supernatural horror film written, co-produced, photographed, edited, and directed by Oren Pali. It is the first entry into the Paranormal Activity film series.
Target Audience (Who It Appealed To)
After watching the opening to this film, i can connote that this film was targeted at teenagers and adults that range from 18-30. I think this because i think the feelings and horror you get from this film will really kick adrenaline into that age group, and will understand the plot better. As well as this, the film is an 18, therefore will be aimed more at ages into adulthood rather than anyone below 18. This film would appeal to all genders, as it has no theme of being biased to a specific gender, therefore making the movie more popular and overall successful.
Sound
In the beginning of the opening scene, the sound is of the family introducing the area where they live in a happy tone, this signalises that something bad going to happen, as the tension from the happiness introducing the house, is going to turn bad. The narrative of the opening scene of paranormal activity is of the father/wife introducing everyone, this entitles the idea of the audience beginning to understand the characters within the film, and the idea of who are the main witnesses of paranoia and whats going to happen to them. This narrative brings the sense of danger to the different characters within the film, and what is entitled to come, each sentence read out by the character holding the camera is very specific and brings a build up of tension throughout the opening scene.
Representation of the characters and mise en scene
In the opening of the film holds the introduction of the characters and how they act. The personality is shown throughout the opening scene as the feel of it being a family footage brings out their personality within the family and how they act, this type of "home made" footage really adds a sense of realism. The characters are all dressed in reasonably nice clothing, which states that they are quite a well earning family, and have a nice house. This idea surrounding the opening scene is all quite jolly, as the pathetic fallacy of the situation is very sunny and happy, as dark and rain would signal danger or scariness. The sense of someone behind the camera brings a POV shot, which brings a sense of realism into the movie and makes you even more scared because you feel you are there. When the father is carrying round the camera introducing everyone, it creates a happy and well untied family, but also signally danger coming there way. As well as that, they also buy cameras, which shows that the next scenes at night will be shown and you'll see what happens to the family ahead.
Atmosphere Created
The atmosphere created in the opening of the film brings a very happy and jolly feel to the film. As this starts to build up the tension of the film as it signals that something bad is going to happen later on within the film. The time of day and weather of the film signals very happy thoughts as well, by the film director using pathetic fallacy on the audience to make it less scary at the start, as the tension straight away will hit you, rather to the film having a build up of tension through out, making the audience more scared and created a feeling through out the film that something bad is going to happen, making the film a very scary watch.
